Christmas Prescriptions

December 18, 2009

Shropdoc, the out-of-hours service run by local GPs, has issued a reminder to patients across Shropshire and Powys that they do not routinely issue repeat prescriptions over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The reminder comes as the holidays will see GP surgeries closed for four days, and Shropdoc is urging patients who require medication to ensure they have enough.
Dr Russell Muirhead, Chair of Shropdoc, said“It is really important that patients ensure they have enough medication to see them through the Christmas and New Year break.
“Shropdoc does not routinely issue repeat prescriptions and through the awareness campaigns we have run, we have seen a fall in the number of calls asking for repeat medication during these periods. Christmas will see surgeries closed for four days across the country so anyone going away for a break may find that the local out-of-hours service does not issue repeat medication.
“If people are going away, I hope they will add ‘medication’ to their packing list and visit their doctor’s surgery to make sure they have enough to see them through. Those who have friends or relatives coming to stay should remind them to bring their medication with them also so that they enjoy the break with one less thing to worry about.’’
The Christmas break sees Shropdoc providing GP medical cover non stop from 6.30pm on Thursday 24th to 8.00am Tuesday 28th December.  Also the New Year break from 6.30pm on Thursday 31st December to 8.00am Monday 4th January. Shropdoc can be contacted on 08444 06 8888
